Final Report

Michigan Newspaper Project

PA-24048-02

This document represents the final report for NEH project PA24048-02, the Michigan Newspaper Project. The goal of the project was to microfilm 576,629 pages of Michigan newspapers according to appropriate preservation standards and to distribute the film for public use.

During the course of the grant the Michigan Newspaper project filmed 740,472 pages from fifty-one Michigan newspaper titles. Attachment 1 lists the various titles filmed during each fiscal year of the project. Please note that some titles appear in more than one year, as filming occurred in two fiscal years. In all cases a master negative, a use negative, and three user copies of the film were made. Control of the master and use negative, as well as one user copy of the film, was retained by the Clarke Historical Library, Central Michigan University. Use copies of the film were made available to the Library of Michigan and the local community from which the newspaper was printed (usually placed in the community’s public library).

The 740,472 pages filmed represents 163,843, or approximately twenty-eight percent, more pages filmed then the 576,629 that the grant proposal estimated would be preserved. The actual productivity of the project greatly exceeded the anticipated productivity. The credit for this accomplishment rests largely with Ms. Barbara Kirchner, who oversaw microfilming operations throughout the entire project with skill, dedication, and, as the numbers demonstrate, a great deal of hard wok. The project director, and the entire project advisory board, wish to acknowledge her accomplishment.
