The Buildings of Central Michigan University

The Sheep Sheds

The Sheep Sheds were barracks like buildings first constructed after World War II as an inexpensive solution to the University's urgent need for more housing. They were designed and built as temporary structures and the University originally intended to leave them up for only a few years. However, ever expanding student enrollment and other factors required that the Sheep Sheds remain on campus much longer than first expected. Indeed, the last one was not torn down until the 1980s. They were used in many capacities during their long course of service to CMU; as classrooms, office spaces, storage facilities, and student residences.
